California, District 20 (2026)

FFRF Action Fund endorses U.S. Rep. Laura Friedman for reelection in June 2 primary

FFRF Action Fund is proud to endorse U.S. Rep. Laura Friedman in her reelection bid to California’s 30th Congressional District.

Friedman has been an ally of the FFRF Action Fund and the growing freethought community since joining Congress in 2025. Shortly after taking office, Friedman joined the Congressional Freethought Caucus (CFC), committed to science, reason and the constitutional separation of state and church. The FFRF Action Fund awarded Friedman a “Secularist of the Week” plaudit for joining the caucus and for uplifting reproductive freedom, LGBTQ+ rights and environmental protections during her public service.

Friedman has an extensive career serving in public office, representing California’s 44th State Assembly district from 2016 to 2024 and serving on the Glendale City Council from 2009 to 2016. She also served as Glendale’s mayor from 2011 to 2012. She joined Congress after running a successful 2025 campaign for an open seat and is now pursuing her second term. Notably, Friedman serves on the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

While serving in California’s Assembly, Friedman co-authored a voter-approved constitutional amendment to wholly protect reproductive freedom in California, including the fundamental right to choose an abortion and to use contraceptives. Additionally, she co-authored legislation to eliminate cost-sharing for abortion services, which was also signed into law.

She has also tirelessly worked to preserve LGBTQ+ rights throughout her time in office, fighting to end LGBTQ+ job and housing discrimination and safeguarding health care access for transgender individuals. In 2018, Friedman authored legislation to ensure that every domestic partnership has equal access to full and equal tax benefits.

Friedman has been active in the CFC during her first congressional term, further solidifying state/church separation as integral to her duties as a public official. In July 2025, Friedman joined a congressional sign-on letter led by CFC co-chairs, U.S. Reps Jared Huffman and Jamie Raskin, calling on the IRS Commissioner to withdraw its motion that it would gut the Johnson Amendment’s long-standing state/church protections, permitting houses of worship to engage in partisan political activity from the pulpit.

While in Congress, Friedman has fought Trump’s attack on our secular democracy. For example, she cosponsored a resolution declaring support for public K-12 schools and opposing any attempt to defund or dismantle the Department of Education, affirming her commitment to our public and secular education system. Friedman asserts that every student deserves access to a robust, well-funded public education system.

During last year’s second annual Congressional Reason Reception, Friedman gave poignant remarks: “I have for a long time believed that we do not need to have established religion or religion at all to be moral people.”

Friedman, who is Jewish, is a dedicated champion of our secular values and will remain an ally to the FFRF Action Fund during her second congressional term.
