FFRF AF endorses U.S. Rep. Becca Balint for reelection in Aug. 11 primary
FFRF Action Fund proudly endorses U.S. Rep. Becca Balint in her reelection bid for Vermont’s at-large Congressional District. Balint will be on the Democratic primary ballot on Aug. 11.
Balint is the first woman and openly LGBTQ+ person to represent Vermont in Congress, taking office in 2023. Before joining Congress, Balint was a member of the Vermont Senate from 2015 to 2023, where she was the first woman and the first openly gay person to serve as the state Senate president pro tempore. While in Congress, Balint has earned a perfect 100 score on FFRF Action Fund’s Dynamic Federal Scorecard.
The congresswoman is a member of the Congressional Freethought Caucus, which works to preserve our secular democracy and the separation of state and church, and to advocate for freedom of conscience for everyone, specifically including nonbelievers. She is also a leader in the Congressional Progressive Caucus and a member of the House Judiciary Committee.
Balint was an early, outspoken opponent of Project 2025 and its threat to abortion rights and women nationwide. She leads the Stop Comstock Act, which she reintroduced in March of last year. The legislation aims to repeal the unconstitutional and draconian aspects of the Comstock Act, a 1873 federal law that prohibits the mailing of materials deemed “obscene,” including any drugs, medical instruments or information that could be used in abortion care. Under Project 2025’s guidance, anti-abortion advocates are working to use Comstock as a backdoor way to implement a national abortion ban. Supporting the Stop Comstock Act is a major legislative priority of the FFRF Action Fund, and Balint’s allyship in Congress has proven invaluable.
