California: LA Community College District Board of Trustees

FFRF AF endorses David Vela for LA Community College District Board of Trustees

The FFRF Action Fund is pleased to endorse David Vela in his reelection bid to the LA Community College District Board of Trustees, Seat 3.

Vela has served on LACCD’s Board of Trustees since 2020. The district spans 34 cities in Los Angeles County and represents nearly 300,000 students. Vela’s race is nonpartisan, and he is up against two challengers.

Vela focuses on the basic needs of his students, ensuring that students have access to affordable housing while attending college and addressing the district’s rates of food insecurity. He has helped establish basic needs centers on all of LACCD’s campuses.

Vela is also committed to keeping homophobic rhetoric and anti-LGBTQ-plus Christian fundamentalist groups off of LACCD’s campuses. He has reliably passed board rules that ensure that the district does not permit religious-leaning curricula, including Christian creationism teachings. He also works to ensure that all textbooks and curricula in LACCD are secular, based on facts and include every sector of society. When reelected, Vela has committed to introducing motions that support secular public education and denounce local religious censorship movements.

Among his accomplishments while serving LACCD, Vela implemented LGBTQ-plus pride centers at each college, established the first-ever LGBTQ-plus Affairs Committee in LACCD and aided the historic passing of an LGBTQ-plus Bill of Rights for students and employees. He is LACCD’s only openly LGBTQ-plus trustee.

Vela considers himself a part of the freethought community and is openly a non-practicing Catholic. After graduating from UCLA with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and Pepperdine University with a master’s degree in public policy, Vela opened his own public affairs consulting firm.

The FFRF Action Fund joins the Victory Fund, the Democratic Party of San Fernando Valley, the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges, Congressional Freethought Caucus member U.S. Rep. Robert Garcia and many others in endorsing Vela.
