Texas pastor Joel Webbon is a radical Christian nationalist who believes that the American people are too degenerate, stupid, and cowardly to abide by the Constitution and must therefore be governed by a Christian dictator. This dictator, Webbon believes, must “rule with an iron fist” and force everyone to, at the very least, “pretend to be Christian.”Christian nationalism is not just an abstract threat—it is an open, growing danger to democracy and human rights. Texas pastor Joel Webbon is a radical Christian nationalist who believes Americans are too ‘degenerate, stupid, and cowardly’ to abide by the Constitution and must instead be ruled by a Christian dictator who ‘rules with an iron fist.’ Webbon has called for forcing everyone to ‘at least pretend to be Christian,’ adding the Apostles’ Creed to the Constitution, and outlawing abortion, birth control, pornography, no-fault divorce, and IVF.Webbon’s vision for America is nothing short of a theocratic nightmare: non-Christians banned from his neighborhood and public office, Catholics treated as second-class citizens, immigrants shot at the border, adulterers executed, and women stripped of voting rights and publicly put to death for making false accusations of sexual assault. In a recent podcast, Webbon escalated his rhetoric, calling on right-wing Christians in power to ‘absolutely terrorize’ their political enemies, ensuring that they ‘have nightmares every night’ about what Christians will do to them. He insists that government leaders should serve as ‘a terror to those who do evil’—with ‘evil,’ of course, defined by his narrow and authoritarian religious worldview.
“You have to reward friends and punish enemies,” Webbon said. “You then have to terrorize, absolutely terrorize. Your enemies should be having nightmares every night thinking about what the Christians are going to do to them.” “That’s what the civil magistrate is,” he continued. “He is a terror to those who do evil; the Christian Prince. Christian should be in government and those Christians who pursue political office and attain it by the grace of God should absolutely be a terror to anybody who is a threat to Christians here in America.”
