FFRF Action Fund is pleased to endorse Neil Polzin in his reelection bid for Covina City Treasurer. Polzin will face one opponent, Thomas “TJ” Nass, backed by a Christian nationalist church, on June 2.

Polzin was first elected as treasurer in 2022. The office exists to serve as an independent fiscal watchdog for Covina, and Polzin is committed to responsible oversight rooted in policy. His priorities as treasurer include balanced, sustainable budgeting, long-term financial planning, transparency and affordability for working families and seniors. The constitutional separation of state and church is at the core of Polzin’s public service.

Polzin asserts that he has been an activist for state/church separation throughout his entire adult life. He was a founding member of his local Secular Student Alliance, later joined SSA’s national board and worked as one of its inaugural regional campus organizers. He is also a lifetime member of the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

After being fired from the Boy Scouts for being an open atheist, Polzin spent over a decade serving as a camp director at his local Camp Quest, which provides humanist residential summer camps for children.

Nass, Polzin’s opponent, has unconstitutionally used a local Christian nationalist church to push his campaign, appearing onstage at the church and blatantly violating the Johnson Amendment. The church’s pastor prayed over Nass, asking that he be elected county treasurer. Polzin shared with FFRF Action Fund staff that, while his office does not directly deal with issues of religion, Covina’s local government can have a strong Christian nationalist influence and right-wing churches can have influence in the community.

An independent PAC sent out mailers to every resident in Covina, promoting lies about Polzin and claiming that he targeted Covina schools in collaboration with The Satanic Temple. The PAC also spotlighted other Democratic candidates for Covina.

The FFRF Action Fund joins the Victory Fund, the Center for Freethought Equality PAC, the Stonewall Democratic Club, CA Working Families Party, the newest member of the Congressional Freethought Caucus, U.S. Rep. Gil Cisneros, and many others in endorsing Polzin.
