FFRF Action Fund endorses Janani Ramachandran in her reelection bid to the Oakland City Council, District 4.

Ramachandran has served on the council since 2023. She was the first queer woman of color and the first South Asian woman elected to the Oakland City Council.

Ramachandran currently has no opponent and is focusing on her fundraising efforts to keep it that way. District 4 is the wealthiest district and the district with the highest voter turnout in Oakland. It also has the highest number of Republican voters in the city, raising the possibility that conservative views and leadership could take hold. Notably, District 4 has had Republican leadership in the past.

Ramachandran wants to maintain the positive momentum she has seen for Oakland since taking office. She identifies safety, the city budget (including efforts to secure unused funding) and Oakland’s fiscal health as central issues for her office. Oakland generally does well in matters of state/church separation, but if a problem arose, she would take swift action. Oakland is a very diverse city with strong religious and nonreligious communities, and Ramachandran asserts that equity must be preserved and that all backgrounds should be respected in light of our shared humanity. Ramachandran identifies as Hindu.

Ramachandran has championed policies that uplift Oakland’s LGBTQ+ community and families from nontraditional backgrounds. For example, she authored legislation that successfully passed to implement nondiscrimination protections for family and relationship diversity. The legislation was the first of its kind on the West Coast.

FFRF Action Fund joins the Victory Fund, local labor unions and several local and state officials in endorsing Ramachandran.
