FFRF Action Fund announces its endorsement of JoCasta Zamarripa for Wisconsin secretary of state.
Zamarripa will appear on the Democratic primary ballot on Aug. 11. Zamarripa was first elected to the Wisconsin Assembly in 2010, where she served until 2021. She is currently a member of the Milwaukee Common Council.
The secretary of state administers oaths of office for all officials and serves on the board of public lands, which also allocates public school funding. Zamarripa has pledged to maintain the state/church boundary in office and to ensure that public funds remain in secular public schools. Zamarripa has taken her campaigning outside Milwaukee to reach as many voters as possible.
State/church commitment has been a part of Zamarripa’s career, including when she pushed back against religious exemptions for Covid-19 mask mandates. Zamarripa stood with science and the Milwaukee Health Department during arguments to allow religious exemptions. She asserts that religion should not be used as a weapon to create a divide between people.
Before taking office, Zamarripa worked as an outreach and education employee for Planned Parenthood Advocates for Wisconsin. She described her pro-choice and pro-abortion access beliefs as “an innate feeling.”
FFRF Action Fund joins the Victory Fund, U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan and many other Wisconsin legislators in endorsing Zamarripa.
