FFRF Action Fund endorses Rep. Hank Johnson

The FFRF Action Fund is delighted to endorse U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson for reelection to Georgia’s 4th District, where he has served since 2007 and is now in his ninth term. The congressman has ceaselessly worked to protect American democracy and the rights of all of his constituents, regardless of religion or nonreligion.

Johnson has achieved a perfect 100/100 rating on the FFRF Action Fund’s Dynamic Scorecard due to his sponsorship of key pieces of legislation that protect the secular nature of the government. Johnson is the primary sponsor of one of the critical bills evaluated by the Dynamic Scorecard, the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act. The bill would rein in the U.S. Supreme Court by requiring justices to recuse themselves from cases that evoke conflict of interest. It would require justices to adopt a regulated code of ethics, establish an advisory review process for gifts and travel and require disclosures on lobbying and dark money interests that come before the highest court. Johnson reintroduced the bill in 2023, and FFRF was notably mentioned as one of the bill’s official supporting organizations

Johnson also reintroduced the Judiciary Act last year, which would expand the Supreme Court by four seats. Johnson’s commitment to regulating the Supreme Court and ensuring that the highest court reflects the interests of the American public, not the personal interests of corrupt justices, is clearly seen in his sponsored legislation. Due to his honorable efforts on court reform, Johnson is a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee and ranking member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet, where he once served as the subcommittee’s chair.

Johnson has continually served as an ally to FFRF during his time in office, committing himself to constituents of all religions and nonreligion and promoting secular values. Johnson joined in July 2022 the Congressional Freethought Caucus , which promotes public policies based on reason, evidence and science and protects secularism within the U.S. government. Johnson appeared on FFRF’s “Freethought Matters” TV show in 2023, discussing his decision to join the caucus and work to reform the Supreme Court.

FFRF Action Fund is joined by the Humane Society Legislative Fund, Newtown Action Alliance, Progressive Action PAC, Reproductive Freedom for All and National Education Association in endorsing Johnson. Johnson is an exemplary legislator—and we are thankful for his continual work in preserving our secular democracy.
