The Supreme Court is the highest court in the land — that’s why it should be held to the highest level of scrutiny and the highest ethical standard. It is a disgrace that Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito accept gifts and vacations from billionaire benefactors, often without disclosing them to the American people.
The FFRF Action Fund is collecting signatures with our allied partners to deliver to Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, asking the senators to hold a floor vote on legislation to create a Supreme Court code of ethics and launch a full investigation in the Judiciary Committee into Supreme Court ethics violations. The bill is called the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act (SCERT). Think of it as the Ginni Thomas Prevention Act. SCERT has already passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee and is awaiting a Senate floor vote.
SCERT mandates, for liberal and conservative justices alike, the disclosure of financial ties that are the same for members of Congress, requires the justices to publicly provide reasons for recusal in cases involving potential conflicts of interest, establishes an ethical code of conduct for Supreme Court justices, and promotes transparency to safeguard the integrity and impartiality of the judicial system.
