The FFRF Action Fund is pleased to endorse Landon Labosky in his bid for a Seattle School Board seat.
Labosky is running for a school board position due to the rise in school voucher programs nationwide, which are diverting funding away from public school institutions while benefiting private charter and religiously affiliated school systems. He sees this as a danger to the survival of the nation’s diverse communities, because communities do not have a say on the curriculum being taught to students in religious private schools. Labosky is concerned that many students are leaving the public school system in Washington, and admissions to private religious schools are skyrocketing.
Labosky affirms that we need a public education system created by and for the people of the community, free from church tenets and teachings. Labosky is an openly gay man and found solace at his public, secular schooling while growing up. He wants to ensure that LGBTQ-plus youth today will also have the support that he received while attending public schools. Labosky is an open humanist.
The Seattle School District is struggling with budgetary concerns, underspending and an inflated administrative unit. Labosky aims to establish a communication channel between Seattle school boards and Washington state elected officials, facilitating the development of effective school board policies and state laws affecting education. The Seattle School District is the largest in Washington, serving over 50,000 students, which is twice the number of any other district. While the Seattle School District has a progressive demographic, Labosky wants to advocate for statewide issues, such as the actions of school boards on the east side of Washington state targeting trans students and their right to live freely within their school systems.
The position he is running for has a substantial platform of influence over the state of Washington. Labosky asserts that Democrats need people in positions of power who will defend and implement the separation of state and church. His primary election is scheduled for Aug. 5, and the race is nonpartisan.
Labosky works professionally in child advocacy and has a master’s degree in public administration. The FFRF Action Fund joins the Victory Fund in endorsing Labosky.
