FFRF AF endorses Joseph “Joe” Geller in his bid for the Miami-Dade School Board
The FFRF Action Fund is pleased to endorse Joseph “Joe” Geller in his bid for the Miami-Dade School Board.
Geller is in a nonpartisan runoff race to represent District 3, a very competitive area that houses a large Orthodox community. His opponent, Martin Karp has largely self-funded his campaign from substantial personal wealth. Karp is employed by ultra-religious private schools and was investigated by the Inspector General’s Office for assisting a small religious after-school program in defrauding public schools.
Geller has dealt with many state/church cases while serving as a regional president for the American Jewish Congress and is dedicated to protecting free speech and the separation of church and state. He is firmly against chaplains-in-schools programs, which Gov. DeSantis made legal in Florida earlier this year, and private school vouchers.
Geller advocates that the lines between secular and religious education should not blur and that religious instruction should not exist in the nation’s public schools. He believes school boards are the frontlines of protecting American democracy. Priorities in Geller’s school board campaign include stopping schools from whitewashing history curricula and protecting LGBTQ-plus students.
Before running for the Miami-Dade School Board, Geller served four terms in the Florida state House, concluding his legislative service in November 2022 because of term limits. He also served as the chair of the Miami-Dade County Democratic Party. Geller is a Municipal Attorney with extensive litigation experience in both the Florida and federal courts, focusing on civil litigation, election law, government relations and municipal law.
The FFRF Action Fund joins Educated. We Stand, the Democratic Public Education Caucus of Florida and many others in endorsing Geller.
