The Action Fund supports measures to allow those suffering chronic pain and terminal illnesses to make choices to die on their own terms, not religiously dictated terms. Measures granting this right in multiple states include adequate safeguards to avoid abuse of the law, and the only remaining objections are religious in nature, amounting to the belief that humans are improperly “playing God” when someone with a terminal illness avoids an undignified and potentially excruciating “natural” death. These religious considerations may inform an individual’s decision on such matters, but have no place in public policy.
