Help keep Utah schools free from unconstitutional proselytizing!
House Bill 312 recently passed through the House — and now, we need your help to stop it in the Senate. This bill represents the latest push from Christian nationalists and is detrimental to public school students.
HB 312 pushes the misleading narrative that America was founded on Christian principles. The method? By forcing divisive religious displays and rhetoric into schools. Included in the divisive displays is the Ten Commandments, an undeniably religious document. The bill sponsors attempt to whitewash the dialogue by including alongside actual founding texts like the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. This bill even includes its own protection against removing these religious pieces once they’ve been implemented, by prohibiting content-based censorship of these documents on religious grounds.
This bill mandates that teachers instruct students from Kindergarten through 12th grade on all “foundational document[s],” a provision that includes the Ten Commandments. Though the legislation purports to prohibit proselytizing, this requirement will inevitably lead to it. The provision creates a substantial risk of costly litigation for teachers and school districts, while simultaneously promoting a fundamentally inaccurate perception of the nation’s founding among students.
Again, this bill has cleared a major hurdle when it passed the House, so please urge your senator not to support it. We have included suggested language through the “Take Action” button that can be edited by clicking or tapping on the pencil icon. The best way to get a lawmaker’s attention is to share your personal perspective, so please take the time to share your own story if you can.
Additionally, after sending the emails, you will be prompted to call your senator as well — even leaving a phone message shows your dedication to the cause! For best results, please be succinct and polite.
(Note: You must live in Utah to take part in this action alert.)
