Indiana students need you to help stop Christian displays in their schools!

House Bill 1086 will be heard tomorrow at 9:30 a.m., and we need your help to stop it. This bill is a quick and dirty attempt to force schools to post Ten Commandments posters for all students to see, completely disregarding students’ First Amendment rights. Please voice your opposition to this bill to members of the House Education Committee right away!

This attempt is the latest from Christian nationalists to incorporate the explicitly religious document into students’ education. Lawmakers pushing bills like this are completely apathetic to the discomfort they’re forcing onto non-Christian students, so long as their religious beliefs get public representation. These posters would even go directly against the Supreme Court’s long-standing precedent that stand-alone Ten Commandments monuments on public property violate the Establishment Clause because their primary purpose is religious. Christian nationalists know that students are a captive audience at school, and in their eyes, if they can convince even one student to convert to Christianity, these posters are worth the effort. This is your chance to defend the American principle of a student’s right of conscience!

Again, this bill will be heard tomorrow, Jan. 27, at 9:30 a.m. by the House Education Committee, so time is running out to make your opinion known! We have included talking points through the “Take Action” button that you can use to warn the committee about this bill. If you have your own experiences to share, you can edit your message by clicking the pencil icon. After sending an email message, you will be directed to a phone prompt that you can use to call your legislators as well. Even leaving a voice message is an effective way to get your point across, so please call if you have the chance! For best results, please be succinct and polite.
