The newly filed House Bill 183 comes from a legislator with a checkered past of mixing his ultra-religious viewpoints with his job of representing his constituents. The bill is another attempt to push a fake narrative against the trans population. HB 183 eliminates the legal recognition of gender identity in Utah, but perhaps even worse, it strictly limits employment opportunities for transgender individuals, including in education. This attack on the trans community is an explicitly religious one that is part of the continuing surge of legislation against trans individuals. The lawmaker who introduced this bill, Rep. Trevor Lee, has a history of using hateful tactics to target the LGBTQ+ community and is now trying to abuse his seat of power by infusing state laws with his own religious doctrine. Religious extremists are more than happy to justify their hateful ways on the basis of “sincerely held” beliefs, and this is no different.
