Christian nationalists are using Gov. Greg Abbott’s special session to further an agenda that they couldn’t pass during the Legislature’s regular session. Senate Bills 17, 19 and 9 directly attack secular, public schools and allow religious indoctrination from school employees. We need you to email your senators now to tell them to reject these egregious bills!
Senate Bill 17 would require school districts or open-enrollment charter schools to allow an employee to engage in religious speech or prayer while on duty. This is a clear attempt by Christian nationalists to promote Christianity in public schools. Senate Bill 19 is just as bad. This bill would permit students and faculty to participate in a period of prayer and reading of the bible or other religious texts each school day. This will inevitably lead to students being proselytized by their teachers and other school employees during school hours. Senate Bill 9 is a resurrection of the proposal to post the Ten Commandments in every public classroom in the state. The bill died during the regular legislative session simply because legislators ran out of time. They have been granted more time because of a special session and now are determined to force public school students to look at a specific version of the Ten Commandments each day.
