An important bill needs your support to help curb child abuse!
Hot on the heels of Washington, D.C., Maine is moving to put a stop to child marriage. The Joint Committee on Judiciary needs to hear from you for LD 1185 to have the best chance at being signed into law. Take action today to stand up for the rights of Maine children!
LD 1185 will raise the marriage age to 18 with no exceptions. This would allow for Maine to become the 14th state to completely ban child marriage! Without laws like these, minors, who lack full legal rights, can be coerced into marriage with no escape, since they’re not “old enough” to file for divorce. Those who exploit this loophole often do so in the name of religion, trapping their victims in a legally recognized relationship, which frequently leads to increased rates of domestic abuse, lower educational attainment and economic instability. Maine children deserve better than this, so please help to ensure this bill becomes law!
The Joint Committee on Judiciary will soon be hearing this bill, so the time to reach out to members is now! We have included talking points through the “Take Action” button that you can edit to your liking. For best results, please be succinct and polite. For extra impact, you will be directed to a phone script to call legislators after you email them. Please take the extra minute to call them if you can!
