An important bill is waiting to be heard in Washington state! House Bill 1455 unanimously passed the House and now sits in the Senate Law & Justice Committee waiting for a hearing. We need you to contact members of the committee to tell them to schedule the bill for a committee hearing!
HB 1455 would eliminate child marriage in the state of Washington. This bill would change the age of marriage from 17 to 18. The difference may seem insignificant, but it is vital to setting the standard to end child marriage everywhere. There is a long history of religion enabling and perpetuating child grooming and marriage. A just, secular society should protect children, and hold abusers accountable, regardless of religious affiliation. Washington has taken the necessary steps to end this out-of-date, predatory practice. If the committee advances this bill, and the entire Senate approves it, Washington can be the 11th state to put an end to child marriage. Contact the committee today!
The bill is ready for a hearing today! Encourage members of the committee to ask the chair to schedule the bill for a hearing as quickly as possible.
