Puerto Rico’s legislature is considering PS 1, which would create sweeping and dangerous religious exemptions. Please use our form to contact your representative and urge them to vote against this bill!
PS 1 would add the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) to Puerto Rico law. Like the federal RFRA and state RFRAs around the country, this would allow discrimination from Christian organizations against non-adherents under the guise of protecting religious liberty. The bill creates an exemption from any law that allegedly burdens religious belief (“carga sustancial o impedir el libre ejercicio de la libertad religiosa”) unless the government can meet an extremely high legal standard known as “strict scrutiny.”
Although initially intended to protect minority religious rights, in practice, RFRA has allowed adherents of the majority religion to choose which laws apply to them and to discriminate based on their religious beliefs.
PS 1 would also specifically interfere with students’ rights to a secular public school system and would threaten public health by allowing for religious exemptions to vaccines and prohibiting the government from limiting church gatherings during a pandemic. Please contact your representative today and urge them to vote against this dangerous and discriminatory bill!
