Tomorrow morning, August 26, the Collier County Board will be deciding on a motion to display the Ten Commandments on county property. FFRF Action Fund needs your help to ensure that state property isn’t used to push religion on all residents of Collier County. Please plan to attend the board meeting, in person or virtually, to speak out against this motion!

According to the board’s agenda, the motion claims that the Ten Commandments “represent one of the earliest codified systems of ethical and legal principles in Western civilization.” A copy of the commandments would be displayed alongside the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights to push the false narrative that America was founded as a “Christian nation.” The County Attorney acknowledged that “Displaying the 10 Commandments by itself has been struck down by the Courts,”  but the proposal’s sponsor thinks they can get away with it if they include other documents. Their goal is obviously to promote the religious message of the Ten Commandments on behalf of the county, which is unconstitutional.

The best way to make sure this display isn’t approved is to voice your opposition to the motion to the board directly, either in person or via Zoom. Motions like these are often the first step Christian nationalists take to normalize religion on public grounds. Fight back against this motion and keep religion off state property!

The meeting will be tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. at Collier County Commission Chambers, 3299 Tamiami Trail E., Suite 303. Please plan to attend if you are able! If you would like to register to speak, you will need to arrive earlier than the scheduled meeting time.
