Christian nationalists are fighting to bring religion into Alabama public schools!
A whole slate of theocratic bills passed their committee hearings, and we need your help to stop them in their tracks. These bills have the power to force Christianity into public schools in a variety of ways, from Church representatives talking to students to religious posters in school classrooms. Please contact your lawmakers today, and ask them to keep public education secular!
First, HB 8 would allow school boards to permit religious chaplains to provide services at public schools, with the only requirement being completing a recognized chaplain training program.
SB 99 would require all fifth- through twelfth-grade history classrooms to display the Ten Commandments for students to see, with the bill even falsely claiming that the commandments are an important part of American history.
SB 248 would force school districts to allow for-credit religious release time programs, effectively paving the way for religious indoctrination during the school day.
Finally, SB 209 would require sex education to be limited to abstinence-only materials, a practice motivated by religious dogma and debunked by experts in the field.
The sponsors of these bills disingenuously claim that these bills aren’t intended to push religion onto students, but the contents clearly show their religious purpose, as does the fact that they are all being pushed at the same time. One senator even went so far as to say that he wished SB 99 would also bring prayer back to public schools as a way to further “reprogram” students. Public schools exist to educate students, not religiously indoctrinate them. These bills must be stopped!
These bills are moving very fast, so please contact your representatives today to urge them to fight back!
