Maine legislators need to hear from you! The Joint Education and Cultural Affairs Committee will be hearing a group of voucher bills tomorrow, May 24. Act today and keep public funds out of religious schools!
Several bills introduced are looking to create and expand a voucher program that would take money from public schools and push it toward private — usually religious — schools instead. These programs force public schools to work on a reduced budget, robbing students of a well-funded education. Don’t force secular schools to make sacrifices for the benefit of private institutions! Keep public funds for public education.
The committee will also consider LD 809, a bill that allows local school districts to opt out of private school funding programs. We recommend you support these bills to limit the damage being done by the current voucher program.
