A great bill will support Maryland’s freethinkers! House Bill 871 is going to be heard on Wednesday, March 8, by the Health and Government Operations Committee. Please urge the committee to vote in favor of this bill!
HB 871 removes language from the Maryland Constitution that allows for discrimination against atheists seeking to hold public office. The practice comes from a historically unconstitutional practice of requiring public officials to profess a belief in the existence of God. However, this language was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court over 60 years ago, and yet it has not been removed from the state Constitution. The time to rectify the situation is long overdue!
This bill will be heard on Wednesday, so don’t delay in urging the committee to support it! We have included suggested language through the “Take Action” button, which you can customize as you see fit. For best results, please be succinct and polite.
