The usual suspects are at it again in Texas. An incredibly troubling bill is heading to a Texas Senate committee. The Texas Senate Committee on Education will be hearing a bill that will promote a Christian nationalist agenda and shape Texas education for the foreseeable future. Take action to keep religion out of public schools!
Senate Bill 1396 would allow for public schools to provide prayer and bible readings on school days. Texas already requires students to say a religiously coded Pledge of Allegiance, but this bill aims to bring religion even closer to students. This highly unconstitutional bill would require students to opt in to these bible studies by providing a signed consent form from a parent or guardian acknowledging that they have no objection to prayer and bible readings, and that they “promise not to sue” over the prayer. Seems innocuous enough, right? But, despite these protections, this bill leaves plenty of room for teachers to encourage students to participate in these bible studies. This practice cannot be permitted! Public schools need to be protected from religious intrusion. Take action today to help keep schools secular.
This hearing will take place on Wednesday, March 29, so please don’t wait to take action! We have provided suggested language through the “Take Action” button, which can be customized as you see fit. For best results, please be succinct and polite.
