The New York Legislature has recently passed S 5332, a bill that expands treatment options for New Yorkers in the criminal justice system. If signed, this legislation will ensure that all individuals who are mandated to attend recovery support programs are provided with secular options. Take action today and urge Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign this bill!
Currently, individuals with criminal justice involvement account for 47 percent of all treatment admissions to New York State’s Office of Addiction Services and Support. However, the only support groups available for many participants are based on the traditional and faith-based 12-step model. Too often, individuals in the court system are denied access to nonreligious recovery options that are consistent with their values and personal beliefs.
Gov. Hochul had an opportunity to sign this bill last session — but the support wasn’t strong enough for her to realize how important of an issue this is. Take action today to make sure that doesn’t happen again! We’ve included suggested language through the “Take Action” button, which you can customize to your liking.
