TAKE ACTION: Urge Vermont lawmakers to end child marriage

Last week, the Vermont Senate Judiciary Committee passed an even stronger version than expected of a bill banning child marriage in Vermont — thanks to the help of freethinkers like you! Now, we need you to make your voice heard again. Please urge the Vermont House of Representatives to carry the bill over the finish line and onto Gov. Phil Scott’s desk with strong public support!

H 148 will raise the marriage age in Vermont to 18 without any exceptions. This includes ending any sort of religious exemption! According to UNICEF, minors who are married are 50 percent more likely to drop out of school. Early marriage additionally doubles a teenager’s chance of living in poverty and triples the likelihood of domestic violence, as compared to adults. Children are typically pursued for marriage by religious individuals using outdated dogma to justify their abusive behavior. Don’t leave Vermont children at risk!

The battle isn’t won yet. Please take action today to show support for this important measure! We’ve included suggested language through the “Take Action” button, which can be customized as you see fit. For best results, please be succinct and polite.
