Florida legislators are trying to bring back the dark ages!
House Bill 1069 would further change public education with even stricter restrictions on what can be taught in classrooms. Don’t let Gov. Ron DeSantis claim that this bill is popular — contact him today and urge him not to let religion destroy sex ed!
Among several other problems, HB 1069 would prohibit any instruction of human sexuality, including menstruation, until sixth grade. This is a clear attack not just on Florida education, but women too! This bill deliberately uses vague wording in an effort to completely prevent teachers from discussing any topic that might be deemed “inappropriate.” The bill would additionally force books off of shelves if they’re challenged at all, prior to any review. This is one of the most extreme Christian nationalist attacks on education yet, by furthering an escalating campaign against education out of fear of educated students identifying as nonreligious.
Unfortunately, Florida lawmakers have already sent this bill to DeSantis’ desk. While he is hardly an ally of secularism and will likely sign this bill into law, we cannot allow him to say he did so without opposition.
