The U.S. House of Representatives is considering a dangerous amendment to a pending appropriations bill. The Food and Drug Administration could soon lose its ability to fight against pseudoscience homeopathic products if Amendment #4 of HR 4368 is passed. Amendment #4 to HR 4368 would bar the FDA from enforcing regulations on homeopathic products as long as the product complies with “standards for strength, quality and purity set forth in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States.” This would effectively allow producers of bunk “medicine” to regulate themselves. Lawmakers have an obligation to restrict harmful behavior and to enforce reasonable regulations on legitimate practices — this amendment flies in the face of that principle. It would freely allow snake oil salesmen to profit off the ignorance of Americans who don’t understand that homeopathic products are literally just water. Don’t let the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia’s standards decide that holy water is good enough — demand that your representative oppose this amendment!
