Utah — Salt Lake City School Board

FFRF AF endorses Turner Bitton in his bid Salt Lake City School Board

The FFRF Action Fund is pleased to endorse Turner Bitton in his bid for Salt Lake City School Board, District 2.

Bitton is an open atheist. He is committed to opposing vouchers for religious private schools, chaplain programs in Utah’s schools, statewide book-banning efforts and the inclusion of the 10 Commandments in the state’s history curricula. Bitton has pledged to act as a bulwark against the efforts to undermine the First Amendment’s guarantee of protection against the establishment of religion.

The race is nonpartisan and Bitton is running against one other opponent after the incumbent was defeated in the primary election. This will be a close race. Both candidates are Democrats, although the race is nonpartisan.

Despite the Salt Lake City School District having a predominantly progressive demographic that is likely to protect secular values, the state of Utah is moving in a very different direction. It is clear that the state wants to integrate Christianity into every state school, and Bitton is dedicated to maintaining the integrity of secular public schools within his district. When elected, he plans to actively engage with the legislature and push back against attempts to bring religion into Utah’s schools.

Bitton is also the current chair of the Glendale Neighborhood Council. He is heavily involved with his community and is the founder and executive director of the Utah Center for Civic Improvement, where he promotes civic inclusion and civic values.

The FFRF Action Fund joins the Victory Fund, the Democratic Municipal Officials, AFL-CIO, Equality Utah and many others in endorsing Bitton.
