Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is abusing his power once again.
Abbott has recently called for another special session in order to create a private school voucher program in Texas. The only thing stopping your tax dollars from being used to fund actual indoctrination is strong opposition to this grandstanding special session. Voucher schemes are favorites of theocratic legislators, since they allow public schools to be wounded in favor of private, often religious, schools. These programs deploy the myth of school choice to “save” children from underperforming public schools despite the fact that studies have shown students at voucher schools seeing no benefit over those at public institutions. This is just another example of the mounting assault from Christian nationalists working to tear down public education to keep future generations from becoming freethinkers. Young freethinkers are the most dangerous thing to a theocracy — Texas needs your voice more than ever!
Another crucial lesson from vouchers in other states is that they primarily pay for the tuition of students who would have gone to private schools anyway. The real point has never been to provide “school choice,” but rather to force taxpayers to pay for private school tuition, which happens to almost always be religiously affiliated.
Abbott will push for the voucher expansion as long as he can’t see any opposition.
